HOLINESS MEANS BEING OPEN TO GOD, POPE SAYS

Being a saint doesn't require spending long hours in prayer, but rather living life open to God in good times and in bad, Pope Francis said. Christians should live with the "hope of becoming saints" and with the desire that "work, even in sickness and suffering, even in difficulties, is open to God," the pope said June 21 during his weekly general audience.

"We think that it is something difficult, that it is easier to be delinquents than saints. No! We can become saints because the Lord helps us. It is he who helps us," he told the estimated 12,000 pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. READ MORE

ST DOMINIC’S VISIT FROM WANDANA

We had our Wandana Aboriginal cultural experience day today. What a day!! It was absolutely amazing. The kids LOVED it and the company were just fantastic. The finished products are outdoor panels that will stand proudly in our front area.

All staff and students contribute along with parents, Dominican Sisters, reps from the CSO and our Parish Liaison Officer. It was a beautiful community day that resulted in a very special artwork for our school. The story of the painting is pertinent to our school and community, which makes it even more special. On behalf of everyone at St Dom's a sincere thank you for the generosity and support. It was a very special day that our community will remember for a long time.

STATEMENT FROM NATIONAL CATHOLIC EDUCATION COMMISSION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHRISTIAN ZAHRA

Mr Zahra said there remain a number of concerns about the implementation of this rushed policy, including the use of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for students with disability, the operation of the National School Resourcing Panel and the conditions on funding the Minister will be able to introduce.

“A better approach to developing education policy would have involved a proper consideration of the views of educational leaders from all sectors, whose voices were largely ignored in favour of the voices of politicians,” Mr Zahra concluded.

CEC OVERVIEW OF AMMENDMENTS TO THE EDUCATION ACT

On 23 June 2017, the Australian Education Amendment Bill 2017 (the Bill) completed its passage through the Australian Parliament with amendments. It is now an Act of Parliament that amends the Australian Education Act 2013 (the Act). The final vote in the Senate was 34 ayes and 31 noes.

The Act retains the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS), which will comprise a base per-student amount, discounted by the school community’s capacity to contribute for non-government schools and supplemented by loadings for disadvantage.

The legislation will now move to a funding approach in which the Commonwealth will provide a consistent Commonwealth share of the SRS—20% for all government schools and 80% for all non-government schools.

2016 NSW SURVEY OF SECONDARY STUDENTS’ POST-SCHOOL DESTINATIONS

This report presents key findings from the 2016 NSW Survey of Secondary Students’ Post-School Destinations. The survey consists of cross-sectional telephone interviews with students who completed Year 12 (n=3,287) or left school before completing Year 12 (n=3,700) in 2015. It also includes a longitudinal survey consisting of follow-up interviews (via online and telephone) with Year 12 completers (n=1,343), early school leavers (n=1,523) and Year 10 students (n=1,564) who took part in the 2014 NSW Survey of Secondary Students’ Post-School Destinations and who had completed further follow-up interviews in 2015. The main aim of the survey is to monitor and examine trends in, and correlates of, post-school education, training and employment destinations among secondary school students in NSW.

NOT FOR PROFIT REQUIREMENTS AND P&F assn

How do the not-for-profit requirements apply to Parents & Friends (P&F) associations and groups of volunteer parents or other bodies who raise funds for a non-government school?

P&F associations are generally structured in one of the following ways:

  • Separate legal entity - as incorporated associations under the NSW Associations Incorporation Act 2009.
  • No separate legal entity - as a volunteer group of parents under the governance structure of the school. The potential application of not-for profit requirements to P&F associations or groups of parents or other bodies, is based upon their legal status.
