One in the Spirit: Catholics, Pentecostals celebrate Pentecost with pope
Pope Francis' very public friendship with and overtures to Pentecostal and evangelical leaders is a high-profile reflection of a relationship that already existed at the grass roots between Catholic charismatics and some of their Spirit-filled neighbors, leaders of the renewal said.
While some Pentecostals in some parts of the world, especially in Latin America, have a reputation for trying to convince Catholics to leave the church, the reality of the Catholic-Pentecostal relationship is much more varied.
In many places, they share praise, worship, music and Bible studies with Catholic charismatics, and they set out together to proclaim to all that Jesus is Lord and work alongside each other to feed the poor and defend the unborn.
Francis invited some 300 Pentecostal and evangelical leaders to Rome to join an estimated 30,000 Catholic charismatics in celebrating Pentecost and marking the 50th anniversary of the Catholic charismatic renewal. READ MORE
The Paris Agreement and global solidarity
President Donald Trump is taking time to listen to his advisers on whether the United States should honor the Paris Agreement on climate change. The administration has repeatedly delayed its decision and an announcement is expected after the meeting of G-7 leaders in Sicily. This delay may be a good thing.
On his way to Sicily, President Trump met with Pope Francis, exactly on the second anniversary of the promulgation of "Laudato Si'" May 24. While it is not known that the date of their meeting was deliberate, Pope Francis gave a copy of his ecological encyclical to the president, who said he would read it. One may still hope that the president will embrace and apply the message of "Laudato Si'" during his term in office. READ MORE

Senate Inquiry Must Investigate Concerns About New Funding Model
the National Catholic Education Commission's submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Australian Education Amendment Bill and an associated media release. The NCEC explains there are some worrying aspects about the Government's school funding plan and the associated legislation. NCEC acting executive director Danielle Cronin says the Senate Inquiry must investigate the concerns that Catholic education and others have raised. The Inquiry should consider how Government policy supports the accessibility and affordability of Catholic schools in communities across the country and should seek to maintain the quality of Australian schools and systems, Ms Cronin said.
